May Day March 10am
Barcaldine lays claim to the first May Day March in Australia.
In 1891, striking shearers marched down the main street of Barcaldine.
Over the years many decorated floats and marchers have continued the tradition. Many labour unionists and Australian Labor Party people have marched down the street to celebrate May Day.
Barcaldine’s 2016 May Day March was no exception. Marchers celebrated 125 Years since the Great Shearers’ Strike and the significance of that event for labour politics in Queensland and Australia. The Premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczu and the former Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke were amongst many other dignitaries marching in the procession.
